Icarus

2021.

Original design drawn in the style of Pharell Williams’ 2006 album cover “In My Mind”. Hand-stitched details. Interactive belts and functioning pocket.

In the story from ancient Greek mythology, Icarus flies too close to the sun and the wax on his wings melts, making him fall to his death. This got me thinking— what if Icarus had technology? What if Icarus had an airplane, or even a parachute?

This piece as a whole is a metaphor for technology’s impact on individuals. I executed this by adding a seatbelt protecting Icarus on the back of the sweatshirt. The circular pocket represents the Sun he would have flown into, with the belts, representing technology, holding the Sun down so it cannot harm him.
